A recent study suggests that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these treatments need to be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Experts propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the medication report a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
