At least thirteen passengers killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in public works. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
